I’ve always wanted to visit Alcatraz. I don’t know why old penitenteries are so interesting to me, but they are. Maybe it’s the thought of all the stories of those who were locked up there floating around in the air, like ghosts. The weather was perfect, though a bit chilly, as we rode the ferry to the island. I can only imagine what it must have been like to ride over knowing you wouldn’t be returning to the mainland for years or maybe ever. When we arrived, we were ushered up a hill and into the prison to receive our headphones for the tour. This tour is extremely well-done. The narrators walk you through where to step and where to look and do their best to bring the prison to life for you. The most interesting bit for me was finding out that they actually took pride in the food that was served there. I remember watching movies thinking I could never hack it in prison because of the bugs and maggots in the food. I guess I would have been okay here. Ha!
The blimp in the photo below is a giant Despicable Me minion. I love this city!
